I USED TO BE A SOMEBODY
I played the trumpet with sweet piercing sounds
and everybody listened as I led lead my 12- piece
swing band while swing cats jitterbugged and danced
the lindy Hop and foxtrot. Our dance floor vibrated
with joyous Fred & Ginger copycats who showed
the creative talent that could have provided opening night
for every musical show on Broadway.
The aliveness of music transforms the quotidian into
the miracle of passionate love. Many of our dancers
fall in love and get married.
At the end of the evening none of the dancers
are willing to leave until we turned all the lights off.
I have never been that important again—
I’m just a plain old nobody now.
